The SS2 area of Petaling Jaya is well-known for being a tourist hub, and with hundreds of wonderful places to go and eat it is easy to learn why. You could spend days here trying new eateries and never run out of new experiences. So, to save you time, which SS2 food & restaurant would we recommend above the rest?
We have found you 31 locations that we would suggest that you check out if you ever visit the area. Each one has its angle on local or foreign cuisine, and so you will find something new as you check off each one. Bon appetite!
1. SS2 Food - Kooky Cream
Another of the calmer types of restaurants. You could see someone sitting in here with a book or a quiet open laptop enjoying a lazy afternoon.
They have many different desserts, switching them out on a regular occasion, so you will rarely find yourself bored of them. The staff makes them right there in the cafe, so they are fresh at all times.
As for their drinks, their Fresh Lemon Cold Brew Black Coffee stole the show. If that is not your style, they also do a dark chocolate drink that appeals to the more sweet palette.
2. SS2 Food - Mei by Fat Spoon
Out of all the food options on this list, this comes first as it was our favorite. There are so many options, and when they arrive I did not expect how well the restaurant presented them. It turns out this was only a hint at the wonderful taste I was about to experience.
Of course, I had to try their MEIrry Don, which from their menu looked like a specialty. It was obvious why from the first taste, as the whole meal excited my taste buds from the first bite. With a diverse range of flavors, I did not find myself bored with the meal as I could keep trying new things.
If you want a less varied single dish, the Moo Moo Rice Bowl was perfect for us. The beef arrived cooked to perfection and it tasted even better than it looked.
3. SS2 Food - Gooddam
When we told people that we were trying food in the SS2 area, people always recommended Gooddam. We would hear “It’s so Gooddam good” enough times to make me roll my eyes into the sun. But, puns aside, I was very happy to give this location a go as it was one of the highlights of our visit.
The venue offers both a 3-course lunch menu as well as a 5-course dinner. They even have a separate vegetarian menu, which was useful for my mother when she learned that she could not have meat for a short time.
Their offerings are diverse, and we had a little trouble picking what we wanted because it all seemed good. Although the waiting staff were helpful and spoke to us about which options were popular as well as which ones they liked.
I would recommend the Aged Lamb Saddle with marsala jus and black garlic. It made the whole trip an absolute treat, and I would have it again given the choice.
4. SS2 Food - Seoulite
It is important to try many different types of food on a visit to somewhere new. This is why we went into this cafe, for something lighter than the above restaurants.
This place specializes in signature coffees. Their Misu Honey Latte is very much to die for, with a mix of sweet and moreish oaty flavors. If I lived nearby, I would pop in for one on the way to work every day.
Their foods also appeal to many different palettes. We found things that suited each of our moods. I had the BBQ Chadol Panini, which was a fantastic sloppy sandwich and I ended up satisfied to learn had a homemade barbeque sauce.
All in all, a place worth returning to in the future.
5. SS2 Food - PoPo Hot Pot SS2
This SS2 restaurant joined the world of Petaling Jaya as an expansion of Kepong’s PoPo Steamboat Cafe. They have an astounding number of ingredients for their signature Mala broth. Together, this fusion of flavors creates a food location that you will want to return to again and again for.
If it is your first time, go for the mini hot pot. You will find your appetite as soon as the food is in front of you, but it is better to be safe than get a large offering and feel sad that you want to leave it. Then come back later with more of your friends.
6. SS2 Food - Konnichiwa The Hub SS2
This location has both indoor dining as well as tables next to a picturesque outdoor park. Take your time on a calm, warm day to enjoy its Japanese food as you enjoy the outdoors.
From the many, they try many unique dishes that you rarely often find in such restaurants. We recommend the Chuka Kurage and signature Konnichiwa roll. Both dishes had us satisfied before we moved on to the main meal.
7. SS2 Food - The Ding’s
The Ding’s features a blend of traditional Chinese cuisine mixed with other offerings from across the world. Together they make meals worth trying for the sole reason that you will not find anything like it anywhere else.
The Smoked Japanese Sake Infused Char Siew Roll was a good first choice for us. One of our number was a bit more adventurous and went for the “Nabemono + Milky Mix + Seafood + Noodle” dish. They enjoyed it, although they thought the choice of rice noodles could have been switched out for a different option.
8. SS2 Food - Kee Hiong Klang Bak Kut Teh SS2
This is one of those locations that are popular with the locals, so you know that it is a good choice. From the menu, we would recommend the Claypot Bak Kut Teh. It is wholesome and filling in a way that reminds you of many local home-cooked meals.
If you want to check out the side dishes, then definitely go with the Char Kuih, which they make from a local recipe.
The only thing we would warn is to make sure to catch it at a quiet time, as the place does tend to fill up fast.
9. SS2 Food - 66 Nyonya Secrets SS2
This location has only been around for one year but has already made a good name for itself in the area. They have good noodle and rice dishes, as well as kuih for those who want a sweeter snack.
One thing I would say is that their “hot” foods are a little mild. If you want something stronger, you might need to ask for them to change up the recipe for you.
Everything tasted authentic, though, which was a big plus, and the waiting staff was wonderful to us as we muddled through our orders. Worth checking out.
10. SS2 Food - Moon Kee Fish Head and Seafood Noodles
This was a wonderful and calming experience for us. We had heard of “Fish Head Noodles”, but we had never tried them before. It turns out this range of soups and noodles is delicious.
The location was nice and cool on the otherwise warm day when we visited, so it was a nice change of pace that had us content with warmer food. We were also shocked at how affordable the menu was. We expected something a lot more expensive based on the decor, but this was perfect.
If we were to recommend anything specific, we would say to try the Deep Fried Four-Dinger Threadfin. While I was unsure about deep-fried fish in a soup, it turns out that it was delicious.
11. SS2 Food - Ming Kee Porridge SS2
The idea of a porridge restaurant was not something I expected to visit while I was in the SS2 area. Yes, there we were, with pots of hot food in front of us, and we were pleasantly surprised.
Every one of their porridge options ranges in flavor well across the savory spectrum. One of the more unique ones we saw had frogs, although we went for a safe curry porridge.
It was great to heat us up on a cold day, and if it is ever raining we would recommend you go here for a nice, warming meal.
12. SS2 Food - Loong Seng Dim Sum
Dim Sum is a favorite of mine, which is why I was excited about this option. While the location is often packed, you do find that it is swarming with locals who enjoy the food here, which is always a good sign.
I was a big fan of the restaurant’s Har Gao. That was always a favorite of mine before I visited, and I did not leave disappointed. Of the other options we chose, we most enjoyed the Chaw Siew Bao and the Bolo Bun to finish off the meal. We almost had to fight for the buns as we were so happy with them, so heed our warning that this location might lead to open warfare.
13. SS2 Food - Kafe Pin Chou
This location had almost a buffet feel to it, with many open plates holding servings. The location has some authentic Penang options, as well as a very wide variety of foods.
You will see many people coming here for lunches and breakfasts, and for good reason. The food is all good as well as cheap, so expect to get a good deal for your money.
We would recommend the Mee Rubus and Hokkien Fried Mee. Although be aware that while the place is takeaway only, that is not a problem if you plan in advance.
14. SS2 Food - Iberico Kitchen
If you love pork, you’ll love the Iberico Kitchen. They wear their ingredients on their sleeve and see pork meat as the best of all options.
The location serves many different styles of food and has set menus for different times of the day. This allows you to go when the options are perfect for your mood.
We were huge fans of the specialty Iberico Pork Noodle. It came with a complimentary drink over lunch, and so we felt it was a wonderful deal that tasted perfect
15. SS2 Food - Restoran Lim Mee Yoke
Another very busy location, in part due to the price, but also because of the food. This location specializes in Mee noodles, and the ones we tried were to die for.
We did find that some of the sauces were a little bit watery, but that was offset by them having a wonderful taste to them. The food also seemed fresh and well-prepared, so expect a high quality of goods from here.
16. SS2 Food - Nyonya Restaurant
This place prides itself on an authentic experience. The Baba Nyonya restaurant offers many special options for those wanting to try something Chinese.
Thinking we would go along with the theme, we chose the Ayam Curry, having heard it was a traditional dish. We received an aromatic and tasty bowl of sauced meat that we would never want to turn away.
This was only the start of what became a favorite to return to. They are friendly, their food is good, and they even helped us find a few good things we would not have otherwise tried.
17. SS2 Food - TNR by Sean & Angie
Popular for its char siew rice, this location is a favorite among locals. While the portions are not huge, they do everything that they can to make them as flavorful as possible.
They also provide combo meals for those on a budget. So, pick up a plate of noodles or rice, along with a topping and a drink for not much at all.
18. SS2 Food - Two Pesos
This hot pot restaurant was full to heaving when we arrived. It turns out that this is a common occurrence, and you should expect it to be popular because of its delicious offerings.
Their Puffy Milky Pot not only had tasty, fresh ingredients, but it came with a fresh pastry that soaked up a lot of the broth’s flavor. I wish I had thought of that for my home soups before I came here, but now I do it all the time!
19. SS2 Food - Young Sanna Mee
This location promotes itself as “Sauna noodles”. In doing so, it tries to combine health benefits and a good-tasting experience.
In truth, we can only attest to one, and it is not a health improvement from the food. In fact, the location might have made us put on a few pounds over our time near here.
The mini-hotpots were an absolute delight. We had the Seafood Sanna Mee, which was a great mix of flavors, including a great noodle broth. Come here if you are in the area.
20. SS2 Food - Ah Guang Lamb Pot
It is no surprise to anyone that this location sells lamp hot pots. They start by searing the lamb within the pot itself by setting its contents ablaze, then put that out by pouring the broth into the bowl. This creates not only a fantastic taste but a fun experience too.
Try their Fu Yu sauce along with their wonderful lamb stew soup. Then add a few more ingredients as you see fit. It is moreish, decadent, and a fantastic social place to be.
21. SS2 Food - No Meat
I mentioned my mother who was unable to have meat above. Of course, as soon as I mentioned a place that had the name “No Meat” she almost shook me unconscious in her excitement.
They have a varied and flavorful menu that does not forgo anything by not including meat. I became lost in this vegetarian paradise as I tried their crispy pumpkin with cereal, and finished it off with Diced Eggplant with Spicy Sauce. Find something that matches your mood here, and you will forget that it has no meat too.
22. SS2 Food - Restoran Prosperity Bowl
Poached chicken is not that common when you go about looking for a good chicken location. You usually find fried options, but if you want something with a little more moistness you usually have to make it yourself.
Prosperity Bowl proves that it can happen and that you will enjoy every bite. Most of their meals are noodles and chicken, along with other things. There are many different options, and we loved the Smooth Rice Noodles, Poached Chicken, Pork, and Fish Balls.
23. SS2 Food - The Butcher's Table
While they focus on meat-based foods, The Butcher’s Table is not only that. They start with specific meats but then combine them with many different options to make some wonderful meals.
We were a big fan of the Pork Burger with Pancetta. The flavor was unexpectedly sweet and left a smoky taste in our mouths. Well worth a visit.
24. SS2 Food - Shin Zushi
This is a new entry in the SS2 area and it has already made a splash with good food made with fresh ingredients. While there was a long queue, the location was worth it. The decor is perfect, the food is delicious, and you can expect wonderful service.
25. SS2 Food - Restoran Melaka Street
I had not tried Marmite before coming here, but the Marmite Chicken at the Melaka Street restaurant is something I will not soon forget. I looked up my own recipe as soon as I got home, but I could not make something even half as nice as what this location offered me.
They have several set menus for different groups of people, and each one is well-made for different palettes. Each option was good, and coming here with a group of ten was a fine idea. They seated us, fed us fast, and had us happy all night.
26. SS2 Food - Pho King
If you want authentic Vietnamese food in the area, you do not have many options. This is one of the best.
As soon as you enter it is easy to see that they put effort into decorating the location so it feels both open and homely. They also put that same effort into their food, making something that is not overpowering but leaves you satisfied. In short, it’s Pho King delicious.
27. SS2 Food - Restaurant Teow Chew Meng
As another restaurant selling broths and noodles, it is hard to stand out in SS2. Teow Chew Meng does it with their specialty offering of Seafood Mee Sua Tow. We did not expect to enjoy such an experience as it did not look like much, but it turns out that this dish was more impressive in flavor than appearance.
Do not expect the appearance of the food to match the images on the menu. But also do not expect anything less than a great meal.
28. SS2 Food - Hog Kitchen by HK Pork Noodle
The food here combines Japanese and Malaysian dishes to create something to phone home about. We found ourselves spending much too long taking photos of the dishes, as we wanted to tell everyone we knew how good it was.
They specialize in pork, and by focusing on that make a great product with well-sourced ingredients. Their pork noodle soups are the center of their offering, so pick that up over everything else.
29. SS2 Food - The Soybean Factory
This place was rather crowded, and we almost didn’t get a seat. Lucky for us, someone just left before we turned up, allowing us to dine in. We were happy we did, as after our first dessert we wanted more and more.
The location focuses on dessert-like creations out of soy. We chose the Winter Lover and 3 Life Lovers to get a mix of flavors and ended up with a very unique experience. Soybeans were not at the top of our list of meals, but it turns out you can do great things with them.
We are not sure how to recommend it other than to say that it tasted good, and we are glad we did not leave without first giving it a go.
30. SS2 Food - DurianMan
There are many Durian sellers in the SS2 area, and this one seems to have risen to the top of popularity in the region. To this location, “every day is Durian day”, and you can see why with so many different options for this pungent fruit.
As usual with Durian, if you are a fan you will love it, but if not maybe keep your distance. If you have never tried it before, we would recommend the Durian cheesecake. It tempers the flavor and has a wonderful texture that helps seal the deal.
31. SS2 Food - Chef Chew Kitchen Restaurant
While the location itself does not scream fine dining, it provides a wonderful atmosphere for a hearty lunch or dinner. The waiting staff was friendly, the food was simple but tasty, and everything had a good price to it.
A good place for a regular meal when you are not celebrating anything.
Not only SS2 Food
After trying all this, there is no doubt that you will be an expert in introducing SS2 food to your friends and family. Still, there are so many other food options out there around the Kuala Lumpur area, and not only in Petaling Jaya.
